CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
The room contained a table with no chairs, their data pads, and themselves and now, me. Everything was painted gray, even the ceiling and floor with muted lighting from someplace I couldnât see although it was very bright shining down on the tabletop. It was rather disorientating. The flat quality of their voices, the way the words dampened and disappeared in the drab room, suggested this room was highly secure in every way. No wonder they needed an actual person to input information in the pad; I suspected they couldnât record their session even if they wanted to do so.
My back turned to them in my designated corner, ready to write down whatever they said with my stylus pen, I knew I had no chance to see what they were working on or what this session was about. If my hair wasnât a part of this body, it couldâve sent a strand or two out to investigate, but that wasnât possible in this form. We hadnât yet figured how to become invisible in any way. Too bad, wish we could.
A flash of light startled me and I raised my Perpad so I could see in the screen a reflection of a 3D display over the table. I blinked at the amount of detail available on what appeared to be photos of the burned down cabin. This is about the fire! And perhaps, about my rescue and where my Amorphan family is being held.
A few seconds later, they started speaking in hushed tones, one at a time at first, then with overlapping voices and I realized they spoke in a language completely unknown to me. What the frick? What language is that? I wondered if my internal translator would kick in, the military grade one inserted before coming here and the one they didnât have a clue I had inside my brain.
Unknown language. Takes a while to learn. Frustration came through, loud and clear.
I noted my skin flashed red, one of the many colors of frustration, but it stopped as soon as I noticed it. The colors settled into dull hues, reflecting boredom and patience on my part, even though that was far from what I was feeling.
I started to feel sensory deprived, standing there, staring at a blank gray wall, only hearing the cadence of their voices behind me. When one voice snapped, âGrunt! Write this down,â I startled like a new-born baby. I started to turn toward the speaker, who said, âStay facing the wall. You can write from that position, yes?â He didnât sound friendly.
âYes, Officer. I can, Officer.â
He reeled off a string of numbers and I hoped I got them right. He ordered me to repeat them back, which I did in a shaky voice. When he said, âAs you were,â I huffed out a silent puff of relief. The rest of my time in there was more of the same, each time with different numbers. My mind puzzled over them, trying to make sense of the sequences.
